Two incredibly important questions in regards to our economy.

These are questions that we, as small business owners just like you, have had over the past several months. To get answers we asked Kenneth Moyer, senior financial consultant for International Assets Advisory, LLC, to come out and talk to the group. Thanks to our cool sponsors of the month, Rinaldi's Air Conditioning Service, he was able to.

To kick off the month we welcomed Colleen Gallagher, president and CEO of local non-profit Community Coordinated Care for Children, Inc. to discuss the benefits of child care to employers.

In honor of Colleen we played a child care themed game that can only be described as...interesting. As always, it’s a blast to see so many professionals loosen their proverbial ties and try on their acting hats in front of a group. But we digress.

Gallagher began her talk telling us about the thousands of children 4C helps in Central and Southwest Florida. “Every child has potentional. At 4C we strive to make sure every child can achieve theirs,” she says. 4C helps parents and employers in all aspects of child care, from payment to education and training, every single day. Each year, many employees lose hundreds of hours of productivity because of their child care service or lack thereof. Colleen went on to tell us some of the varied programs available for employers.

No, that’s not a typo – the information provided from Jennifer Wakefield, director of public relations for the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission (or EDC for short), was better than good. For businesses, it was gold. In our last meeting of January sponsored by Fitness Together of East Orlando we had the distinct pleasure of learning a bit about what Orlando has to offer the business world and how we can grow each and every one of our businesses just by spreading the good word.

What do we mean by that? Wakefield starts off by telling the group that their role at the EDC is market Orlando. That means that they are responsible for bringing new businesses and consumers, both nationally and internationally, to our backyard. “My job is to help spread the message that more people live and work here outside of the theme park industry,” she says. (That’s you guys.)

One of the biggest grabs for the Metro EDC recently was the Burnham Institute, which if you haven’t heard will be on of the anchors at the new Medical City in Lake Nona. “Typically Orlando tends to lead the state and the state tends to lead the nation in economic development,” Wakefield says. Quickly adding that, “everything is not as bad as the media makes it out to be.”
