MEETING THE NEEDS OF OLDER ADULTS MAKES GOOD BUSINESS SENSE
The best way to be successful in business is to start by finding an unmet need and then finding a creative, effective way to meet it. In today’s world, seniors (people aged 65-plus) make up 12.4% of the U.S. population, according to the Administration on Aging, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the National Center on Health Statistics 2006. This holds true, most especially for Central Florida. As baby boomers graduate into senior citizens, the numbers are expected to swell to 20% of the U. S. population by the year 2030.

Promoting healthy behavior with wellness programs leads to a healthier workforce and substantial return on investment. The “Healthy Workforce Act” was just introduced to the U.S. Senate by Senator Harkin (D-IA) and Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR). If passed, this bill would provide tax incentives to businesses that offer comprehensive wellness programs. Incentives can be as much as $200 per employee.
Tips to Finding and Securing Grants
Many organizations are eligible to apply for funding to help them with the costs of various projects, such as product development, medical research and training. Typically, nonprofits are most likely to benefit, but occasionally other businesses are eligible. Funding may be available by a federal, state or local organization or by a corporate, charitable or civic group. Just recently, the Florida Center for Nursing Retention & Recruitment Funded Initiative Program selected Partners for a Healthy Community (PHC) to receive $10,384 to manage and implement a marketing campaign, titled “Are You Man Enough to be a Nurse,” aiming to recruit men into nursing. PHC was one of only nine organizations funded out of 42 applicants. Receiving this funding was not an easy task. Many hours went into creating a concise, compelling application that would encourage support of our efforts.
